Welly Craft Markets - coming soon

I'm busy preparing lots of exciting new free range wears for Craft 2.0 , the fantastic indie craft show that takes over the New Dowse in Lower Hutt every once in a while. This is happening again on the 19th of July, so if you are in the Wellington area come check it out.
A little further down the track is my favourite local crafty event, Knack08. Not on the scale of craft2.0, but heaps of fun and you get a peak inside the wonderful community the operates around the Berhampore School. Next Knack 2nd of August @ Berahampore School, 105 Britomart Street (off Adelaide Road).

Spring time coats

Bring on spring time! It's been pretty hard to contemplate warmer weather while in the depth of an especially bitter Welly winter, but I'm starting to mix in some spring weight coats with the quilted variety. Here's hoping we might be able to do away with a few layers some time in the not too distant future.
This is my favourite new coat. All the spring coats are fully reversible, and come in plain, hooded or collared varieties.
Available in sizes 6, 12, 18months
construction of a farm yard coat

I spent the day cutting out a big new batch of coats. This is my favourite. Another Palmy Op. shop treasure is being turned into a quilted coat. I adore this print, orange, brown, animals and retro, what better combination could there be? Perhaps the african themed fabric I have in the same style.
This was my second attempt at quilting fabric, although I have now realised that I need to quilt the fabric after I cut out the pieces and insure that the batting is smaller than the outer fabric. Otherwise I end up with seams so thick that the poor little person inside the coat would be stuck like a statue, unable to move. It's going to be a case lots of unpicking and re quilting, oh well, all will be nutted out come #3!
Gorgeous vintage buttons too!

Custom Orders
I love doing custom orders, and it's even more fun making things when it's for a friend... Like these little numbers that flew off to Aussie on the weekend.

Quilted Winter Coats
It's rather chilly down at free range studios at the moment. This has inspired me to start cranking out super snuggly quilted coats. This little number uses gorgeous vintage fairy tale cotton that mum and I found on our recent Op. shopping trawl in Palmy North. I paired the fairy tales with dusky blue drill. It's also fully lined with blue and white gingham, making it "almost" totally reversible, just those pesky buttons would be a bit tricky.
Check out those straight quilting lines too! My first attempt to quilt my own fabric.

Cranes fly

I find it impossible to part with even the smallest scrap of gorgeous vintage fabrics, being as they are irreplaceable and I hate being wasteful of cotton, given the huge resources that are pouring into its production.
So here is one of the remedies to the problem of creating "scrap" pieces of fabric in the production of free range baby clothing.
These are origami cranes, folded with fabrics in the same way as they would be with paper. Fabrics are patched together in order to create cranes in a variety of sizes.

farm themed pinafore
This is my favourite of the latest batch of pinafores. The fabric in this wee number was screen printed in Norway in 1980, it took some serious commitment to cut into it, but I love how it turned out. If you want to check out more pinafores stop by the glorious Wanda Harland in Petone or Swonderful in Brooklyn (Wellington)... Pinafores retail for $58, are fully reversible and they come with the wee free range chick.
Custom orders always welcome, pinafores available in sizes 1, 2, 3 years

Outfits available in a range of stripes including white and blue, cream and black, blue and green, yellow and blue, white, yellow, green and pink.
Two piece set $48. Available in sizes 3, 6 & 9months.
